New Zealand's Most Infamous Sporting Moment of All Time* Tournament!

Pixel Tees is all about celebrating those great sporting moments that made us fans. In 2021, I wanted to find out what was our nation's greatest sporting moment of all time, as voted by the fans. So, I ran the highly scientific, highly subjective: New Zealand's Greatest Sporting Moment of All Time* Tournament! Which saw Grant Elliott's six to win the 2015 CWC semi-final narrowly edge out Jonah Lomu running over Mike Catt in the 1995 RWC semi-final in the grand final. You can see all the results here.

After a few beers down at the pub debating the results, it became apparent that New Zealand has just as many 'infamous' sporting moments that can't be ignored! As they are part of our folklore as much as the great moments. Therefore, I give you the: New Zealand's Most Infamous Sporting Moment of All Time* Tournament!

In an attempt to find the sporting moment that makes us wince, cringe or cry the most, I’ve created another highly scientific, highly subjective little voting tournament that pits 16 iconic NZ sporting moments in a titanic battle, with the winner voted by you on the Pixel Tees’ Facebook page.

The first round will be a group stage, where the top two voted moments from each group will advance to the knockout rounds.

*The selection criteria:
  • The moment needed to pass the folklore test, i.e. do people still reminisce about where they were when it happened? or the 'Oh sh!t I'd forgotten about that, because I've blanked it from my memory' test.
  • Therefore, the moment doesn’t need to be part of a loss... who am I kidding they are all losses.
  • There must be an international component.
  • From the last 35 years, basically because that spans the width of my memory banks (and saves us from the evitable Underarm v Springbok Tour final).
