Hopes were not particularly high for NZ entering the 1992 Cricket World Cup and the prospect of starting the tournament against defending champions Australia was daunting.
I again found myself in the car with my Dad listening to the game on the radio, on the way home from my Saturday morning cricket match. NZ lost three early wickets but as long as Martin Crowe was still there, we had a chance!
In those days getting a 100 in an ODI was a rare sight, so when Crowe was stranded on 99 in the final over, the whole country was willing him on. Finally, with 2 balls left, he had his chance and scored a single to reach 100! And the rest is history… an inspired NZ team went on to beat Australia and go on a dream run to the semi-finals. Inspiring a generation of cricket fans like myself.
